What is Apple Vision Pro. Apple’s first Spatial Computer

Functions of Apple Vision Pro

The Apple Vision Pro is a mixed reality headset introduced by Apple Inc. at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 5, 2023.

Pre-orders commenced on January 19, and deliveries are slated to initiate on February 2, 2024, in the United States, with a global release date yet to be confirmed. Marking Apple’s first major product category launch since the Apple Watch in 2015, the Vision Pro is positioned as a “spatial computer” that seamlessly blends digital media with the real world. Users can interact with the system through physical inputs, including motion gestures, eye tracking, and speech recognition.

Unlike traditional virtual reality headsets, Apple refrains from labeling the Vision Pro as a virtual reality or augmented reality device. Instead, the emphasis is on its role as a spatial computer. The device operates on visionOS, a mixed reality operating system derived from iOS frameworks, featuring a 3D user interface. The headset supports multitasking through floating windows within the user’s environment, facilitated by cameras embedded in the device.

One notable feature is a dial on the headset’s top, allowing users to overlay the camera feed with a virtual environment to enhance immersion. The visionOS also enables the creation of avatars by scanning the user’s face. The front screen, known as “EyeSight,” displays a rendering of the avatar’s eyes, serving as an indicator of the user’s level of immersion to onlookers and aiding in communication.
